It was 2008 and I what food was in a helicopter flying on the culturally rich city of Barcelona.
Seeing it from above was something more important. You realize from 1000 feet up just how tight the location is with the sand coloured buildings clustered closely together in regimented blocks. I visited such sights as 'La Sagrada Familia', one of Antonio Gaudi's great unfinished works, a Cathedral unlike any you're ever more likely to see elsewhere.
Those thinking about architecture will marvel with the sheer detail of the building which sports strange growths on it's spires adorned with what appear to be scoops of ice-cream. I don't exaggerate when I say who's must be a building most abundant in external detail on the planet. The outside walls are adorned with figures depicting the nativity, standing on plinths and nestled among, what seem to be, salad leaves of the frilly variety. It's crazy.
And so begins the relationship that many people develop on visiting Barcelona, a town as multicultural as London however with gorgeous weather for most of the year and sandy beaches within easy reach.
When I left, I realized that the Spaniards do have a flair for design. Just examine their leather wear. Not satisfied to produced run-of-mill leather goods, they bedeck theirs with tassels, studs and zips - stylish and functional. And this love of intricate and exquisite design is often a tradition returning to college hundreds of years.
But one thing I didn't anticipate to see while wandering the streets on this 'carnival' city would be a gallery devoted to the work of a bathroom ware manufacturer.
The Roca gallery houses some of the worlds most contemporary bathroom ware, so beautiful concerning warrant their particular professionally lit displays inside this brilliant glass edifice. Toilets for most other countries are regarded with humor as well as the butt of numerous jokes - pun intended. But to individuals at Roca, a toilet can be a work of art. And theirs are.
The gallery houses such oddities because the 'Urbi 2' counter-top wash basin that includes a swooping profile that wouldn't look out of place in a sc-fi movie. But this love from the avant-garde doesn't mean that they've lost touch with additional regular pieces such as the Roca Laura 4 Piece Bathroom Set which would suit most bathrooms and is priced for most pockets.
