Bicycles nowadays are taken for granted, however they have not been around. Here we take a look at the development in the bicycle and also the popularity of cycling.
In virtually every home on the planet there is a bicycle. I am sure we are able to all remember our very first bicycle, and just how we learned to cycle. My own first bicycle was green, and I still can remember the day my pops took me for the park to carry on for the back of my bicycle in order that I could cycle along the footpath. Suddenly I realised that Dad has not been running along beside me! I was cycling alone. Oh the benefits, I had finally were able to ride my lovely green bicycle. I was SO happy, I fell off! But as they say once you know the best way to ride a bicycle, this skill never leaves you, so back I got in my bicycle, to ride the place to find tell my mother what I had achieved. It was an awesome day.
Most children own a bicycle, it provides them with a taste of independence. As they get older they are able to cycle to visit their friends and school, thus relieving their parents from the job of taxi driver.
In fact bicycles only appeared about 170 in years past. The 1st bicycle was, invented only a mile in the park in S W Scotland, where I learned to cycle.
It was obviously a cumbersome thing weighing around 57 pounds, manufactured from wood with iron wheel rims.
What do hobby horses and bicycles have in common?
In the 19th century hobby horses were extremely popular toys. A Blacksmith, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, observed a youngster playing on a spare time activity horse, and resolved to generate one for himself. He considered your time and effort involved in making this move along, and invented the idea of adding pedals to go the back wheel. This evolved into the prototype with the first bicycle.
He became a familiar sight riding his bicycle along the rutted country roads of S W Scotland. Gaining in confidence he went on a journey that could reach over 60 miles to Glasgow which took him two days. Upon arrival there, he ran over a youngster and had become the first person to become fined (five shillings) for speeding. It is belief that the local magistrate asked Macmillan to present him a demonstration with the bicycle inside yard from the court. He could demonstrate the agility from the machine by after a perfect figure of eight manoeuvre. So impressed was the magistrate which he decided to offer him the 5 shillings needed to pay the fine.
Kirkpatrick Macmillan never profited financially, from your invention from the bicycle, as they never patented his design. It was left to others to build up. However when one considers you can find twice as many bicycles as cars on earth, and Scots including Graham Obree, Chris Hoy, and Mark Beaumont have proved themselves celebrated champion cyclists, it's left to the reader to ponder the inventor of the bicycle's legacy as more enduring, inspirational and preferrable.
