The music starts bumping. The lights are flashing. My dancers strut their way on stage and I start singing to some packed crowd of merely one,000 club-goers in the SoHo dance club in Los Angeles. Was it an exciting, awesome, powerful experience?! Actually, no. Instead of feeling the exhilaration with the moment during one of my first big performances to be a solo music artist, I spent those 3 minutes completely within my head. As I sung my groovy song on auto-pilot, I scanned the bedroom and had these random thoughts consuming my attention: Wow such a big crowd! They all look Asian. I hope they just don't boo us. Do they understand this song? I wonder if they'll book us again. Are we gonna make enough to pay for the dancers tonight? Dang, I just missed a lyric! Are they screaming personally or at me?! It continued and on like this during my head until the end of my “big” performance – that I completely missed.
Have you ever missed all of your “big moments?” Sadly enough, I think everyone's missed special times in this way as well as seemingly mundane moments that is so much more than “mundane” as we would just attain practical power of now. I wish I could say I learned from my club SoHo experience understanding that now, years later, as being a traveling singer/songwriter, I am completely present and fully enjoying each performance. The truth is it is really a daily practice, or else a moment by moment practice to be with what is just present now - whether you're on stage, as part of your kitchen performing all of your dishes, celebrating a milestone with friends or make payment on check-out guy in the supermarket. Big moments to everyday routines can truly convey more juice, more spark whenever we would plug in the power of now.
Here a few practical methods to strengthen your “now” muscle and move towards you from past re-hasher and future-fretter to Perfectly Present Princess or Prince.
Start with Awareness
A excellent place to start is actually noticing those moments when you find yourself NOT in this moment – they generally look similar to this:
You cant' stop re-playing a scene over and over with your mind
You wish you would've said something different
You wish “they” did something different
You linger in resentment or regret
You're stressed-out and overwhelmed with all of you have to do
You're concerned with an upcoming event or situation
You're flighty and disconnected
Just by gently knowing your state, you could start to create the room, the chance for you to consciously choose to be in our instead of from the no man's land of past or future.
Less Multi-tasking, More Focus
More and much more folks are working from home just like me. We eat lunch each of us check email and randomly google things as thoughts pop-up. We've got TIVO playing last night's American Idol and we're conducting a load of laundry too. This is probably not the most effective practice for being inside the now, unless you are a master in the present moment. Instead, for all of us novice now newbies, you will want to experiment with getting your breakfast and doing nothing else but that. Focus in for the robust odor of your coffee, the countless flavors happening inside your mouth with the fruit and yogurt, the delicious view outside your window, plus the quiet or noise that be your landscape. It's a totally different experience as well as a centering one during that, to only “be” using your breakfast. No tv, no radio, no newspaper, just you along with the cereal.
Where are the feet?
Have you noticed when you are in a rush or you're late, the greater you try to force the right path through the day, a lot more comical things get? Comical meaning more messed-up than fixed-up. A beautiful practice to take to these stressful-then/comical-later moments should be to stop and inquire yourself “Where are my feet?” Then look down, visit your gorgeous toes (it's summer so you're wearing open-toe), and say, “There are my feet!” This strangely places you smack dab within the now. There you are inside the hallway within your office, Blackberry on hand, Bluetooth in ear, healthy, breathing, upright and alive. For that second, or however long you choose to be in as soon as, there isn't any problem, no crisis. Maybe we have a problem inside future or on the horizon in another person's office, but right now using your feet, you happen to be totally cool.
Build your NOW toolbox
The ideal thing you can do is develop a “toolbox” full of tips and resources that a majority of fit both you and your lifestyle to help keep you centered in our. Above are only 3 of numerous practices you can test out. The local gym or park, by way of example, is wonderful for giving yoga or tai-chi classes a go. Check out what some of your respective more grounded friends are performing. If meditation looks like a soothing practice for you personally, get started with Ram Daas' easy-to-read book for starters “Journey of Awakening: A Mediator's Guidebook.” Of course Eckhart Tolle's books “The Power of Now” and “New Earth” are fantastic resources, not forgetting the archived web classes with Oprah available on YouTube.com, Oprah.com, or I-tunes. Create an affirmation to maintain with you or put on your mirror, so everyday you repeat to yourself “I am one with all the present moment” or whatever words cause you to feel charged to live inside now. Play it daily inside the mornings to create the tone for ones whole day.
As you are able to see, your growing “toolbox” is invaluable in deepening your connection with all the present along with your connection wonderful of life. There is nothing more practical or life-enhancing than surrendering yourself as much as you may to the power of now. It is the only moment you've got, it's where the feet are, and it's really where peace lives. NOW is where you can everyday peacemakers just like you and me.
